The Crucible had it’s opening night on November 22nd on ACMA’s main stage. The show will run until the 24th of November. The production, for those of you who were unfortunately unable to attend, is set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. I’m sure most of you have heard of the Salem Witch Trials, so it might not be too difficult to guess what the story is about. If you assumed the Witch Trials, well, you’re right! What happens is several girls were caught dancing in the woods with a slave named Tituba (Jazanna-Marie). Of course, the next logical step is to assume that witchcraft is somehow involved. It doesn’t help when Betty, (Bethany Kemper) one of the girls, falls into a coma soon after. The play follows the tension and conflict these events cause while the townspeople try to make sense of what’s happening to their community.
The cast, as always, was absolutely wonderful! Every performer was dedicated to making the production as high quality as possible, giving rousing performances and bringing the story to life. Playing the lead character John Proctor, was Eddie Ortiz; this was his first show at ACMA but you wouldn’t know it with how well he portrayed his character! Geneva Hall played Abigail Williams, our second lead. She gave an inspiring performance and showed off her skills as an actress on stage. Emmy Christopherson, who played his wife Elizabeth, really stood out to the audience as an actress who fully embodies and embraces the character she played. Together with the rest of the cast, The Crucible was a production full of believable, genuine performances from beginning to end. However, we don’t owe the success of the production to just the actors. ACMA’s new theater teacher Shaun Hennessy directed the production with the help of many others including: Anabel Walz, stage manager; Blain Radford, lighting designer; Cooper Cavender, sound designer; Ellie Younger, production manager; Scott Castner, co-set designer; and Oliver Streck, co-set designer.
It was truly an amazing show! I am sure everyone is looking forward to ACMA’s next production!
